In August 2009, Itinerant Media was awarded a £10,000 grant from the Awards For All Lottery Fund to set up and run a year-long media and film-making club for young people in East Brighton.
The aim of the project is to engage young people in all aspects of modern media production and film-making so that they will be in a better position to access further education at local media education establishments. The project will introduce current and up-to-date methods of film-making and production, demonstrated and mentored by broadcast professionals and film-makers who will also offer an insight into the world of television production.
The project will run weekly for one year and aim to produce four short final films that deal with relevent social issues, to be shown in a 'film premiere' event for the local community. The areas covered in the project and production of these films will be:-
- Pre-production; idea generation, script-writing, storyboard, casting, budgeting, scheduling.
- Production; tapeless workflow (filming will be carried out using modern, industry-standard tapeless formats to give a realistic view of current production techniques which will in turn, give the young people involved an advantage over other media training that uses outdated technology and equipment), directing, camera operating, lighting, sound, equipment maintenance.
- Post-production; editing, copyright/clearance.
- Distribution; organising and promoting a 'film-premiere'.
Over the course of the project, the aim is to organise visits to working film and television studios to give a view of how the television and film industry actually works.
